Explore the use of modern information and communication technology to meet the current and future needs of healthcare. In McMaster’s eHealth MSc, students are exposed to three fields of study:
Health Sciences
Engineering
Business
The eHealth program’s interdisciplinary approach exposes students to coursework, projects, and research that will help students discover areas of eHealth that they find compelling. Course work allows students to explore diverse topics, from healthcare reform and transformation, to security and privacy of information, to wearable technologies and health system efficiency.
Broad course content allows students to view challenges and opportunities through the lens of multiple disciplines.
Classes in the program are offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, and the DeGroote School of Business.
McMaster’s eHealth MSc is unique among Canadian health informatics and digital health Masters programs in that it features business and management coursework as a major facet. Our program’s unique take on eHealth is enhanced by McMaster’s international reputation for research excellence and integrated learning.
Opportunities in the eHealth landscape demand technically skilled, entrepreneurial thinkers. Each student’s unique perspective on problems, trends and opportunities in modern healthcare will help them span its traditional worlds with a management-minded approach to problem solving, and make them a pivotal professional in the eHealth environment.
At eight months, McMaster’s eHealth MSc internship is the longest of any comparable program.
As the bridge between the classroom and the workplace, the internship is the perfect opportunity for students to refine healthcare knowledge, business and tech skills, and research interests.
The internship experience is central to the learning process, providing contact time well beyond most probationary periods for full-time work. It’s an opportunity for students to explore areas of interest, develop insights and potential partners for research, and build a network of professional contacts and collaborators.
Our internship program is well supported by a variety of public and private employers in the Hamilton, Toronto, and surrounding areas. Opportunities are not confined to this region, however. Many students find internships in their hometowns, other provinces, and further afield.
Graduate programs are intensive incubators where lasting personal and professional relationships often develop. They are about broadening horizons, building foundations for research, and fostering lasting collaborations.
McMaster’s eHealth MSc will expose students to classmates from diverse professional, academic, and international backgrounds. Student perspectives will be shaped as much by these colleagues as by professors. Students will find value in their input, and rise to their expectations as they push students to move their eHealth experience toward positive, rewarding outcomes.
In class, students will use the inquiry approach to explore theoretical concepts related to digital health and health informatics.
This student-centred approach encourages students to ask the questions that lead to discovery and problem solving, rather than presenting established facts and certainties. Matching this learning framework with the eHealth program’s three-faculty interdisciplinary foundation leads to deeper subject understanding and perspective. Students will leverage McMaster’s innovative approach to integrated learning, Whether they choose the full-time course, full-time thesis or part-time course stream.

McMaster is situated in the heart of Hamilton, Ontario, a 45-minute drive from Toronto.
This region, known as the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), is the most densely populated corridor of economic activity in Canada. Hamilton is perfectly positioned in the region as a hub of innovation in healthcare. The city has a vibrant arts, culture, and culinary scene coupled with numerous outdoor attractions and activities. Most people are unaware that Hamilton is the Waterfall Capital of the World with over one hundred waterfalls just minutes from downtown.
As one of Canada’s most diverse areas, Hamilton is the country’s ninth largest regional economy, and the fastest growing economy in the province of Ontario. Employment prospects are strong for skilled, well-educated workers, particularly in expanding technology fields like digital health and health informatics.
For years, McMaster’s international reputation as a leading research institution has distinguished it among its Canadian peers. McMaster University continues to rank among the country’s most research-intensive universities – for both graduate students and faculty members – in the annual ranking of the country’s Top 50 Research Universities.
McMaster’s standards for intensive, evidence-based discovery are supported by a culture that facilitates and encourages interdisciplinary teamwork. This culture is upheld in the eHealth MSc program, where faculty and students collaborate to create and evaluate digital health solutions from the perspectives of health, business, and engineering.
McMaster’s core research community includes roughly 1,300 full time faculty (including clinicians from the Faculty of Health Sciences), approximately 4,000 graduate students, almost 300 post-doctoral fellows, and hundreds of skilled technicians and research associates. This resource of discovery will benefit you as you explore research opportunities in the growing field of eHealth.
